Zanzibar, was an independent country that joined Tanganyika in the 1960's. Tanzania is a combination of Tanganyika and Zanzibar. Zanzibar is now an island province of Tanzania. On the map above it's one of the small grayish islands to the right of Tanzania.
Our Tanzania trip was limited to visiting the city of Zanzibar for a day.
